Union Pacific is a legendary railroad literally woven into the history and fabric of America – and a wealth of superb routes and DLC bring the historic and vibrant railroad to life in Train Simulator Classic!
Union Pacific! Robust and vibrant more than a century and a half after its creation, builder of the eastern segment of America’s 1860s transcontinental railroad, legendary as host to big motive power from Big Boy to “Big Blow” gas-turbines to super-power diesels, pioneer of diesel passenger streamliners, and today a bustling and vital 32,000-mile railroad system, the Union Pacific could easily make claim to being “America’s Railroad.”
Today’s Union Pacific (and how many corporations proudly carry the same name for more than 150 years!) is a massive, sprawling enterprise that has expanded the traditional “Overland Route” through mergers with railroads including Chicago & North Western, Missouri Pacific, Katy, Western Pacific, Rio Grande, and Southern Pacific, and which now blankets the America West with steel rails stretching from Chicago and New Orleans to Seattle and Los Angeles.
Train Simulator Classic offers an extraordinary selection of Union Pacific routes, locomotive packs, and scenario packs which together recall the UP from its 1860s historic origins as builder of the transcontinental railroad right up to the dynamic present day. Let’s take a look!

Union Pacific Routes

Where better to start than with two route that re-create the heart of Union Pacific’s transcontinental railroad of 1869! Created by Smokebox is superlative fashion, the Promontory Summit Route Add-On takes you back to 1869 and features 68 route miles extending from Corinne, Utah over historic Promontory Summit and along the north shore of the Great Salt Lake to Kelton, Utah. And Smokebox’s Union Pacific No. 119 Steam Loco Add-On delivers more historic UP route miles by including a 26-mile portion of the “Old West” Union Pacific extending east and west from famed Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Bringing to life the Union Pacific of the transformational steam-to-diesel era, and the tough rail crossing of Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, is Milepost Simulations’ Wasatch Grade: Ogden - Evanston Route. Four popular Train Simulator Classic routes feature contemporary, heavy-haul UP freight railroading: the Sherman Hill Route; Tehachapi Pass: Mojave - Bakersfield Route; Granger Heartland: Kansas City – Topeka Route; and Livonia Division: Monroe - Subdivision Route (the later an ex-Missouri Pacific line). The Peninsula Corridor: San Francisco – San Jose Route and its route extension to Gilroy deliver the experience of UP railroading amid busy Caltrain commuter action. These routes include a variety of Union Pacific motive power and equipment ranging from the workhorse EMD SD40-2 and GP40-2 to GE’s modern AC4400CW and ES44AC to UP’s unique SW10 remanufactured diesel switcher.

Union Pacific Locomotives & Equipment

Train Simulator Classic offers a literal cornucopia of Union Pacific locomotives and equipment. Between locomotives included with UP routes and DLC, there are more than thirty types of Union Pacific power available for Train Simulator Classic! Three DLC packs from developer Smokebox include superbly created 1860s Union Pacific and Central Pacific 4-4-0 and 4-6-0 locomotives. And Smokebox brings all the glory of Union Pacific’s “Big Three” steam locomotives to Train Simulator Classic with its renowned Union Pacific Heavy Challenger Steam Loco Add-On, fabulous Union Pacific Big Boy Steam Loco Add-On, and stylish Union Pacific FEF-3 Loco Add-On.
First and second-generation Union Pacific General Electric gas-turbine electrics are available with DTM’s Union Pacific Gas Turbine-Electric Loco Add-On and with the 8,500-horsepower “Big Blow” gas-turbine (the latter included with the Sherman Hill route).
Union Pacific diesel power available for Train Simulator Classic in DLC packs include the Electro-Motive F3, GP9, SW1500, GP20, GP30, GP35, SD45, DD35, DDA40X, SD40-2 (wearing a special red, white, and blue livery), GP50, GP40X, SD70ACe (including UP’s Heritage Fleet units), and SD9043MAC. Union Pacific General Electric diesels include the veteran 44-tonner, potent U30C (included with DTM’s Southern Pacific U33C DLC), and massive and memorable dual-diesel U50. These locomotive DLC packs typically also provide a variety of period-appropriate Union Pacific rolling stock.

Train Simulator Classic Scenario Packs are an ideal way to extend and enhance your enjoyment of routes and locomotives and the packs feature realistic railroading experiences. Scenario packs featuring Union Pacific action include the “Battle for Sherman Hill” Add-On, Sherman Hill Scenario Pack 01, Wasatch Grade Scenario Pack 01, Peninsula Corridor: San Francisco - Gilroy Scenario Mini-Pack 02, and Union Pacific Scenario Packs 01 and 02, the latter two of which include railroading on multiple Union Pacific routes.

The memorable steam-to-diesel transition era – and the rugged Wasatch Mountains of Utah – are recalled with Milepost Simulations’ superb Wasatch Grade: Ogden - Evanston route. In a 1950s scene, a classic A-B-B-A set of Union Pacific EMD F7s is grinding their way up and over the arid Wasatch Range with an eastbound manifest freight.

Perhaps no single part of the 32,000-mile Union Pacific is more famous than legendary Sherman Hill. The Sherman Hill route for Train Simulator Classic climbs to an elevation of 8,015 feet as it stretches between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming. Modern UP General Electric ES44AC diesels are moving grain and coal tonnage across always busy Sherman Hill.

Originally part of the Southern Pacific and today shared with BNSF, Union Pacific’s Tehachapi Pass in California is one of the great amphitheaters of railroading. With potent GE AC4400CWs fore and aft, a Union Pacific grain train wraps over itself as famed Tehachapi Loop. The AC4400CW is one of four UP locomotive types included with the Tehachapi Pass route.

Union Pacific stretches across the entire American West and is captivating and diverse. Far from the mountains of California, a pair of UP EMD SD9043MACs (available as DLC) lead a unit coal train along the snowy Granger Heartland: Kansas City – Topeka route (above), while deep in the “Bayou” country of Louisiana, a pair of EMD SD70s roll tonnage on the UP’s ex-Missouri Pacific Livonia Division: Monroe - Subdivision route developed by Skyhook Games (below).

Throughout its history, Union Pacific was renowned for its “big power,” which in the steam era culminated with the magnificent trio of (left to right) the 4-6-6-4 Heavy Challenger, FEF-3 4-8-4, and unrivaled 4000-class 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. With extraordinary authenticity, fidelity to detail, and realism, developer Smokebox has brought the great trio to Train Simulator Classic.

Biggest of the big: Union Pacific Alco-built Big Boy 4014 (now in excursion service on the UP) climbs Weber Canyon as it lifts eastbound tonnage on the Wasatch Grade: Ogden - Evanston route (above). Standing proud in the night at Cheyenne, Union Pacific FEF-3 840 (below) is dressed in the UP’s stunning two-tone “Overland” passenger-service livery (available as an add-on livery for the Smokebox FEF-3 DLC).

Two generations of leviathan General Electric gas-turbine-electric locomotives (GTEL) worked on the Union Pacific of the 1950s and 1960s. First-generation pioneering UP GTEL 52 (available in the Union Pacific Gas Turbine-Electric Loco Add-On created by accomplished developer DTM) rides the turntable at Cheyenne (above), while second-generation GE 8,500-horsepower “Big Blow” No. 1 is making the descent of Wasatch (below).

Union Pacific followed steam and turbine super power with mammoth 5,000-horsepower diesels in the 1960s. In Echo Canyon on the Wasatch Grade route, EMD DD35A No. 71 meets GE U50 36. Both diesel types are created by developer DTM, and the scene is from action in High Iron Simulations’ Wasatch Grade Scenario Pack 01.

On the Granger Heartland route, veteran Union Pacific EMD SD40-2s are lugging coal while a unique rebuilt Union Pacific SW10 handles switching duties.
